The exhibition "Mister Jan Hus" in the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle
This month we would like to invite you to an exhibition that is very special to Hotel Jenerálka and the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague. The name of the exhibition is "Mister Jan Hus" and is based in the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle. We probably do not have to introduce you to "Master John Hus".
Jan Hus was strongly influenced by the writings of John Wycliffe and was the first person to conduct his sermons in Czech rather than Latin in the Bethlehem Chapel in the centre of Prague. He also faced the congregation, rather than the altar and advocated the giving of communion in both bread and wine. He also criticised the Catholic Church for selling indulgences and amassing wealth.
His ideas were highly supported by the common folks but very unpopular with the Catholic Church and the Roman Empire, even though Jan Hus was a personal friend of the Bohemian king, Wenceslas IV, who had appointed him to be Rector of Charles University. Jan Hus was not only a church reformer and theologian, he also introduced "haczeks" and "charkas" (ř,š,ď, ť, ň,č, á,é,ý, ů, ú) into the Czech language. However, even Wenceslas IV was not able to protect his Rector for too long - especially when the Holy Church threatened Jan Hus with excommunication and he was dismissed from Charles University and Prague. He began to preach in the open air in various places and more and more people came to listen to him.
Unfortunately for Jan Hus, he accepted an invitation to the Council at Constance where he was hoping to explain his teaching to the Holy Church representatives. After many days of waiting he spoke to the Council, after which he was burned at the stake on 6th July 1415.
The Jan Hus exhibition is dedicated to the 590th anniversary of his death. The Curator of the exhibition is one of the International Baptist Theological Seminary's teachers - Doc. Jan Lášek, PhD. He is the leading international expert on Jan Hus; the whole exhibition tries to be as objective as possible, showing the whole of Hus's life, his teaching and its meaning for today.
The exhibition is open from 29th June to 25th September 2005, daily except Monday.
Stay at Hotel Jenerálka and take time to visit this unique exhibition on Jan Hus!
