The first Prague Cubist Café - The Grand Café Orient

If you come to Prague in April you might like the opportunity to be amongst the first visitors to the first Prague Cubist Café.

The Grand Café Orient has been opened again after 85 years. It is located in the House of the Black Madonna, named after the stone sculpture of a black Madonna which sits on the top of it - one of the world's rarest examples of Cubist architecture. The House was built in 1912 in pure Cubist style by famous architect, Josef Gočár.

A few metres from Old Town Square, on the corner of the Fruit Market - Ovocný trh and Celetná Street, is where you will find the original Shopping Mall. The café was closed after the First World War and the whole mall was turned into an administration building. You can find here a unique Museum of Czech Cubism.

Milan Knižák, head of the National Gallery said: "The House of the Black Madonna belongs to the pearls of Czech cubist architecture, which is a style only found in the Czech Republic; it's our speciality. We don't just have buildings but also furniture, pottery, glass and a lot of other different things. No other country in the world has developed so many different variations of cubism".

The Grand Café Orient is on the groundfloor of the building, but you can also wander to the first floor and sit out on a balcony, looking at the Powder Tower and busy Celetná Street, listen to jazz music and imagine the atmosphere of the beginning of 20th Century.
